Case Study: Local History, Local Habitat

This brief guide was created to support high school teachers to better understand the intersection between local history and local habitat; however everyone is encouraged to access these resources.

About this guide

For students of history and science teachers alike, spending time exploring the issues that have faced Washingtonians through time offers an opportunity to better understand the forces that have shaped the communities that surround us. Think about where you live or go to school; the access you have to green space; whether your neighborhood includes a bus graveyard or is filled with single-family homes: These are human-made habitats built on top of the natural habitat of Washington, DC.

Explore the resources in this guide and throughout the DC History Center's programming to grapple with how decisions of the past challenge how we engage with the District's natural habitat today. In this guide we've highlighted selected resources that explore areas such as education, food security, transportation, housing, and green space.
