Researching Family History

Resources to support genealogical and local family history research

Genealogical or family history research is the process of searching for information in the historical record about your ancestors and using what you learn to connect them to past and subsequent generations. Investigating the history of our own families creates a personal connection to the past. Our elders’ stories capture our attention, animating the past with ancestors we may recognize and connect with.  Family history research allows us to place people within the context of others, neighborhoods, and the time period.

With online resources and remote reference, in-person access via a research appointment or family history workshop at the Kiplinger Research Library, or through visiting another local repository such as the DC Public Library's People's Archive, there is no one-stop shop when it comes to resources available in the course of conducting family history research.
