Exploring the Collections

This guide describes the various ways the DC History Center collections are organized, and the methods the public can use to access them.

Printed Materials Collection

The Printed Materials Collection includes books, pamphlets, government documents, self-published works and other printed items.

The Printed Materials Collection is cataloged in the Library catalog. There are two main cataloging schemas used here.

Library of Congress classification is used primarily for monographs with LC classification at the time of publication or easily accessed via Worldcat. This allows material to be physically arranged by subject in the Kiplinger Research Library, facilitating browsing.

Materials requiring original cataloging are handled differently, receiving an object ID comprising a P followed by a 4-digit number. Printed materials with a P number are arranged in the stacks sequentially rather than by subject.

Printed materials that have a distinct connection to a named manuscript collection may be assigned an LC or P object ID, but the collection name will reflect the individual item's connection to the named collection rather than the Printed Materials Collection. This allows items to remain connected to their provenance but be discoverable in the catalog.
