Researching Places of Worship

Selected resources available at the Kiplinger Research Library and elsewhere to research churches, synagogues, mosques and religious bodies.

From religious rites of passage to marriages records, documentation of clergy contributions, architectural upgrades, evidence of social life, activism, community: The records of places of worship are essential documents for understanding individual and institutional history as well as the role of religious institutions in the city as a whole.

With online resources and remote reference, in-person access via a research appointment or the Kiplinger Research Library, through visiting another local repository such as the DC Public Library's People's Archive, or by going to the churches, synagogues, and mosques themselves, there is no one-stop shop when it comes to resources available in the course of conducting research relating to places of worship.
