Through the Teach the District program, stories of local DC are interwoven into a free teacher-professional development program that encourages civic engagement through history-informed action.
The application-based five-day summer workshop connects DC teachers and librarians reaching grades 3-12, with behind-the-scenes access to local cultural heritage organizations. The 2024 Teach the District summer workshop will be held in person from July 22-26, 2024, from 10am to 3pm daily. Mornings are spent onsite at the DC History Center, and afternoons at locations around the city. A buffet lunch is provided each day. Apply for the 2024 cohort here!
Teach the District educators collaborate with collections representatives and museum educators to develop a classroom resource to implement with their students. The resource incorporates materials and ideas shared during the program and can be used on its own or as inspiration for a student-led, teacher-directed civic engagement project that addresses an issue in their community.
The workshop also features exclusive site visits at the DC History Center and beyond, as well as hands-on inquiry-based learning activities.
From 2019-2023, a version of this program was a joint program with the White House Historical Association.
We are grateful for their partnership!
